The day started a bit later this morning. Breakfast on the patio and a leisurely walk down to Victoria Falls hotel. We went via the local markets but got a tad tired of being nagged to buy ornamental hippos and giraffes. I must look like a soft touch cos they leave Harry alone. The pressure was nothing like we have experienced in India or Egypt and it was all pretty good natured. A local told us never to buy off 2 people as one will try and sell while the other runs off with the cash. Another tried to swap a salad server for our umbrella. We have felt very safe in Victoria Falls and this confirms what we have been told. We didn't venture out after dark tho cos we were told we might meet an elephant wandering around.
Anyway back to the hotel. A lovely old hotel - the Raffles of Victoria Falls. Amazing toilets which reminded me of the Mews at Buckingham palace. Lovely view of the bridge as we sat drinking tea on the Terrace. I was amused see pots of convolvulus (old man's beard). Google tells me it is native to Asia and Europe and can come in many colours. Google was also asked "how do you grow convolvulus" and directly underneath it "how do you kill convolvulus". I guess it depends where you live. Inside is a hall full of framed cartoons by
Pont (Punch cartoonist in early 1900s) and obviously very good at taking the Mickey out of his fellow British.
Then along the dusty trail to the falls. At the gate we were amused to see school children in woolly hats (it was easily mid 20's at midday).
The walk along the falls is beautiful. Pebble paths wind through bush. Wild flowers everywhere, ferns that remind me of home, baboons playing and wild boar searching food. The backdrop - water crashing down, spray every where and rainbows. Simply majestic.
The tired tourists wandered back into town and found a place for lunch. While eating we were serenaded by a local band playing a range of xylophones and a little toddler who couldn't stop dancing or taking the money from the buskers basket.
And now it is time to go and join our tour group.
