Castle Drogo
A nice warm day and we decided to visit Castle Drogo - the last castle to be built on England soil. But before we got there we took an unintended detour down some country lanes (high hedgerows with lots of daffodils peaking out from the bracken, gorse and shubbery) a real picture. So, we finally got to the Castle minus Harry's watch (he had taken it off as the sun kept hitting it on the way down and blinding me and I nursed it on my lap until I hopped out of the car to take some photos). Anyway, the good news was he was thinking about getting a new one and doesn't need an excuse anymore!! We wandered the Gertrude Jekyll designed castle garden (daffodils, hyacinths, magnolias, rhododendrons, camellias all beginning to tell us spring is here). The Castle is actually a country home of the Drewe family and they think probably the last private house in the country to be built entirely of granite. From the outside it looks a bit squarish and boring but the house had some interesting furniture (mainly Spanish) including Venetian glass chandeliers, one of the first battery powered clocks, a bathroom with a multi functional shower and a rather wide hallways which made it a bit unique. After another picnic in the sunshine we drove to the Teign Valley and walked along the riverside - more wild daffodils growing amongst more bracken and gorse. Spring really is quite a lovely season isn't it - with the expectation of summer to follow. Sunday was a quiet day - a bit of shopping, lawn mowing, housework, cooking - a catching up day - before going to Chrissy's for tea.
